Treno della Barca
The stretch of modern arcades included in the World Heritage List
Since 2021, included among the sections of arcades recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as an expression and element of the city's urban identity, the “Treno della Barca” is an impressive structure almost 600 meters long, built starting from the master plan for the city that became enforceable at the end of the 1950s for the construction of public housing complexes.
The project was entrusted to Giuseppe Vaccaro, one of Bologna's most famous architects, who thought of an impressive building but lightened by the porches and the desired full/empty games.
The name alludes to the resemblance to the wagons of a train that curve gently along the road: and like a train it is teeming with people, and has always been the place where the new inhabitants of Bologna, once coming from the south and today from all over the world, converge in a melting pot of cultures, languages, habits that make it one of the most genuinely popular places in the city.
